Right on the water, with a commanding view out onto New York Bay, Red Hook is a Brooklyn neighborhood on the rise. “While painting I sometimes get to witness the Queen Mary 2 cruise ship leave and enter the Bay. The sunsets are to die for. The whole experience is magical all year round.”

Home to New York’s Pratt Institute, Clinton Hill is a Brooklyn neighborhood with a young, artsy vibe. A lover of New York’s goth scene, the Haitian-American artist whose love of fantasy is equal parts steampunk and mythology, Retrofuturism and Afrofuturism, finds that many of the interests that fuel her art are represented and even come together in the unique intersection offered by her new location. “This part of town has a second heart that beats in between the New York heartbeat,” she offers.

Covering the northernmost tip of Brooklyn, Greenpoint is historically a Polish community. “Many of the people living on my block have been here for over thirty years” Jas says, commenting on the culture of the community. “People are friendly and as a result you get a small town sort of feel even though you’re in the middle of New York city. In recent years, following the ascendency of its newly-trendy neighbor, Williamsburg, Greenpoint has become home to a rising number of small boutiques, cute cafes and JAS KNIGHTa world of vintage shopping.

Since the early part of the 20th century, Harlem has been one of the most significant African American communities in the country — and the world. As gentrification continues to change the face of the area, Harlem continues to fight to keep its unique identity. When asked why she loves her neighborhood so much, the artist simply replies, “It is a Black neighborhood. The community is strong and alive.” As entrancing as the voices from the past can be in Harlem, for Kobi it is important to note that the neighborhood’s ability to influence and motivate creatives in the here and now is alive and well.
