Nomzamo Mbatha, the face of a blossoming Africa

South African actress and model Nomzamo Mbatha is riding high.

First introduced by an MTV show in 2012, she gained fame three years later for her role in the romantic comedy Tell Me Sweet So mething. As the muse for brands like Neutrogena and Puma, the host of the travel show Holiday Swap (on the South African channel SABC 1), and social media icon, this native of KwaMashu is without a doubt today’s it-girl. MOYI had the privilege of speaking with her personally. Confessions of a young woman living the good life…

Do you feel like your career as an actress came about by chance or have you always wanted to pursue this profession?

I would definitely say that it’s a little of both! I first attended the University of Cape Town, studying accounting. But growing up, I was always very expressive… It wasn’t until later that I abandoned the path that I had started on to follow my dreams.

Did your family environment foster these artistic pursuits?

Not really. My family had pushed me to pursue a safe career in a steady company with a regular salary. However, when I changed my mind to go down an artistic path, my family was very supportive.

What are your fondest memories of growing up in South Africa?

I particularly remember influences from music and clothing… But even more so from the language! I am from the Zulu tribe and there are absolutely no words to describe how much I love my culture, my language, and my traditions. As a child, I was exposed to a lot of crime and fighting, but also to lovers walking hand in hand through the streets of KwaMashu and the laughter of children playing in the streets… These memories are of some of the best times of my life.
